What’s Your Gut Telling You?
What's Your Gut Telling You?
We’ve all heard of the latest fad diet that your best friend’s step-cousin on his mom’s side got great results on. You checked it out and it didn’t work. So what’s the deal? Why is there so much conflicting information out there about health, food, and diets? Assuming you can get that question answered, how do you know which one is right for you? Honestly finding the correct solution starts with discovering the real problem.
Okay, enough with the questions. You came here for answers and right now you’re wondering what’s up with the title and if it’s really that simple. I’ve got good news and bad news for you. The great news is that when it comes to weight and digestive issues - your body can fix its own problems using food. The bad new is this: almost everything you have been told that’s “ ok “ to eat isn’t. If your education on food was anything like mine it didn’t exactly help you much. Remember this thing?
Of course you do! Now that you’re done having a flashback of being 10 years old sitting in that comfy school desk, I’ll burst your bubble. This is not the right way to eat... at all. You actually shouldn’t be eating bread, grain, pastas, or high starch foods at all if you’re truly seeking to solve your body’s issues once and for all. When was the last time you saw pasta, cereal, or a loaf of bread getting harvested? Yeah, it’s all super processed, bleached, more than likely chalked full of chemicals and all that means problems for your poor body. Also, see that milk, yogurt, and cheese section? Throw that in the trash. Are there benefits to dairy in some forms? Absolutely! An argument can be made in its defense. However, among other struggles, you probably can’t lose or gain weight right now and you don’t know what the problem is. In order to fix the issue, we have to find what's causing is first and we do this by eliminating all of the variables we can.
Ok so now that I know that a lot of the foods I normally eat aren’t good for me, but how do I know if I just need to eat differently or if I truly have gut issues? There are some tests that you can run to know for sure what’s going on in the “ gut “ aka, your small intestine; if you have questions about those tests, give us a call. But you can also figure out what’s going on inside the body by the symptoms it’s producing. Similar to not being able to taste anything when you have a cold. Your tongue is still there, but it can’t taste...why? Well, because your sinuses are totally plugged of course, so you blow your nose. That doesn’t work though because the issue is deeper still. The symptom of not being able to taste, feeling some head fog, and a stuffy nose is what you feel, but your body is actually fighting off something you’re unaware of. Your gut - small intestine and the villi, are damaged and therefore it cannot absorb the nutrients you eat, no matter how “ clean “ the foods may be. At this point, a simple diet change is like blowing your nose. It may appear to be a solution but is not enough to fix the real issue. Symptoms of gut health/dysfunction include but aren’t limited to emotional imbalance, fatigue, headaches, joint pain, allergies, asthma, abdominal bloating, cramps, painful gas, Crohn’s disease, IBS, ulcerative colitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and ADHD. Although the Doctor may tell you that he or she has a simple medication that can fix it, if you have more than a handful of the above-listed conditions, you more than likely have gut health issues. The gut issue, when corrected will eliminate the majority of the symptoms you’re having. Treating the symptoms, however, no matter how it’s done, will never trace back to solving the issues in the gut.
